Elephant rides have long been a popular tourist attraction, especially for families with children. However, as we grow older and become more aware of animal welfare issues, we start to question the ethics behind these activities. To delve into this complex topic, we spoke with Dr. Maria Grazia Calvi, a renowned animal behavior expert and director of the Elephant Sanctuary Italia.

"Elephants are intelligent, social creatures with complex emotional needs. Riding them for entertainment goes against everything we know about their well-being."

The reality behind elephant rides

Elephant rides often involve harsh training methods to force the animals to carry tourists. This can lead to physical injuries, such as damage to their spines and feet, as well as psychological distress, including elevated stress hormone levels and abnormal behavior (Payne et al., 2010).

The money argument: Fact or fiction?

Proponents of elephant rides often argue that the money generated from these activities supports the animals' care. However, this is not always the case. A study by the World Animal Protection found that only 11% of the 3,000 elephant camps visited in Asia used the profits to fund the elephants' care (World Animal Protection, 2019).

The alternative: Elephant sanctuaries

Elephant sanctuaries offer a humane alternative to elephant rides. These facilities focus on providing a natural environment for the elephants to live, with ample space to roam, socialize, and engage in natural behaviors. Many sanctuaries also provide veterinary care and rehabilitation services for rescued elephants (Elephant Sanctuary Italia, 2023).
